Doing business globally from India beyond the limits of domestic market requires you to follow several laws and procedures, and get different registration and license. Import Export Code license is one of such mandatory prerequisites for all business entities in India that are looking forward to start import/export of goods or services from India. The IE Code is issued by the Director General of Foreign Trade (DGFT), Ministry of Commerce and Industries, Government of India.

The Import Export Code is a 10-digit code and it has lifetime validity until the registration is surrendered or revoked or until the business exists. Since there is no need for renewal, filing and updating this code registration, it is recommended for all companies and LLPs to apply for and obtain Import Export Code after incorporation. Without this code, neither importer merchants can import goods nor can the exporter merchants avail benefits for the export scheme, etc. from the DGFT. The IE Code is auto-generated once you submit the online application with the DGFT.

However, a post-verification of the online Import Export Code would be conducted by the authority in accordance with certain guidelines. If any information furnished is found to be incomplete or wrong, penal action would be taken against the applicant and the allotted IE code would be either cancelled or suspended.
